OTP Industrial Solutions is now stocking and supporting the newly introduced family of Flowserve ISC2 mechanical seals.

OTP Industrial Solutions has expanded its mechanical seal inventory to include the newly introduced Flowserve ISC2 family of mechanical seals.

“We are stocking nearly every standard seal configuration possible to service the Durco Group I and Group II pumps,” states Tim Davis, Pump Specialist. “We have both 1-3/8” and 1-7/8” shaft sizes to support both large bore and standard bore stuffing boxes.”

The Flowserve ISC2 Series is a complete family of mechanical seals that provide exceptional reliability and standardization over a wide variety of industrial applications. It is the preferred mechanical seal for ANSI and general service pump applications and the seal design is so versatile it may be the only seal required by some facilities. Facilities that standardize on the ISC2 will benefit from less inventory, greater flexibility, rapid availability, less downtime, and longer seal life.

The ISC2 mechanical seal introduces new technology exclusive to Flowserve and offers many upgrades to competitive seals.

Exclusive Thermal Management Technology – tolerates dry running and cavitation events associated with “bad actors”. The addition of carbon graphite between the rotary face and metal components acts as a heat sink to lower seal face generated heat.

Square Head Pin - centered in the rotary face the square head self-aligns to evenly distribute torque loads, thus reducing face fractures. The torque carrying capability is three times that of similar competitive seals.

Throttle Bushing – increased size of the throttle or “disaster bushing”. When seal failures do occur, the process can be directed to the drain port for added safety, and to provide an improved housekeeping advantage.

Enhanced Barrier Circulation – groove machined in the gland to assist with barrier fluid circulation. The added circulation further helps to keep the seal faces clean and operating cooler.

Thicker Bellows - manufactured bellows thickest in the industry. Available in sizes up to 3.750″.

Improved Set Screw Material – made from 17-4 H900 stainless steel to insure a positive bite into the sleeve/shaft, thus reducing slippage and galling of the drive collar. This upgrade also makes it easier to remove the seal if required.

ISC2 seals meet all major international standards and ISC2-682 seals help customers align their standardization programs with the sealing industry’s most comprehensive best-practice standard: API 682/ISO 21049.

OTP associates from six OTP locations trained in rotary union applications at Deublin North American headquarters in Waukegan Illinois.

OTP Industrial Solutions for Fluid Power Applications
Tim Griffith
Terre Haute, Indiana

I recently returned from rotary union school at Deublin North American headquarters in Waukegan Illinois.

The training was clearly worth my time. We went over basic operating theory, selection and sizing, disassembly and reassembly, and failure analysis. We also discussed in detail many rotary union applications for the machine tool, printing, paper, corrogating, plastics, and steel industries.

One of the key things I took away is the appreciation that many people do not install rotary unions correctly. (As much as people like the ball-peen hammer, it is not the tool to use!) There is a specific sequence required to insure that the internal workings of the rotary union are not damaged during installation. Connect the hose first to the rotary union. Then install the rotary union to the respective piece of equipment. (Did you see that?
As important as the technical knowledge that I gained were the relationships that I built. The Deublin people were great and I know they will support OTP when we need it. Even more impressive, I was but one of sixteen technical OTP salespeople from six different OTP locations at the training. I even found out that we currently repair Deublin rotary unions in our Fort Wayne shop.

We sure do have a lot of strong technical associates at OTP!

OTP Industrial Solutions for Pneumatic Applications

I was working with a machine builder in Indiana that builds OEM machines for the medical equipment industry. The customer was experiencing failures and unacceptable operating life with the pneumatic cylinders that they used to move parts into an acid bath. Although the cylinders were constructed of stainless steel, they exhibited premature shaft wear which caused the cylinders to fail in the corrosive atmosphere.

After investigating the application, we determined that the cause of the premature shaft wear was the design of the cylinder bushing. After understanding the root cause, we replaced the failing cylinders with a specially designed SMC Pneumatic cylinder. This special SMC Pneumatic cylinder utilizes a different (and better!) bushing design than the other manufacturer’s cylinder.

The special SMC Pneumatic cylinder has now been in service for more than six months and is holding up much better than the other manufacturer’s product. The operating life of the SMC cylinder is at least double that of the previous cylinder.

Due to SMC Pneumatic’s ongoing attention to reducing their internal manufacturing costs, the customer’s purchase price of this specially designed cylinder was actually less than that of the competitor’s standard cylinder!

As an SMC Pneumatic Technical Distributor (and a self described “airhead”), this is just another example of how I apply my technical knowledge to engage SMC engineers to solve customer pneumatic applications.

Gusher Pump and OTP solve leaking pump problem in automotive machining oil circulation application

When the customer first contacted us, we considered replacing the pump with a Gusher vertical immersion pump, which we have often used successfully in similar applications. However, there was not enough room inside the tank to mount the pump.

After reviewing the application further, we installed a Gusher 7550 EC series vertical pump . We selected this pump because its enclosed column allows it to be mounted outside the tank and it was not fitted with a mechanical seal. Its jacketed ball bearing housing is ideal for high temperature applications. Although this pump initially cost three times more than the pump it replaced, it quickly provided maintenance cost savings by eliminating seal failures and the resulting mess of a leaking pump.

We installed the first Gusher pump over three years ago and it is still running with no problems. The customer has since purchased two more pumps for similar service in other areas of the plant and is now looking into making this pump a standard at their other manufacturings plants.

Gusher Pump proved again to be a good partner with just the right pump to solve any application.

Coal slurry pumps are essential part of the mineral processing in a coal prep plant. A common problem in these plants is keeping the impeller properly adjusted as the parts wear. Improper impeller adjustment results in premature wear to the liquid end of the pump, and can affect the efficiency and performance of the entire system.

However, impeller adjustment can be a dreaded job for a mechanic. The atmospheric corrosion present in most prep plants often causes the bearing assemblies to seize to the pedestal, and the adjusting mechanisms to become inoperable.

Recently a customer voiced his concerns about this problem. We listened and presented the customer with a customized solution.

The customer agreed and purchased a new pedestal that was sent directly to our Middletown Ohio pump repair facility. We machined the pedestal to accept new removable 316ss seats, while maintaining tolerances. (The stainless seats will not seize to the cast iron bearing housing). We then manufactured and installed a new design adjuster mechanism to allow the mechanic to adjust the impeller from the rear of the pump – making adjusting faster, easier and safer.

The coal prep customer is pleased and OTP is in the process of upgrading other plants’ slurry pumps as well.
